PREVIOUS LETTER INDEX

Will Fisher to his mother
Camp near Dallas, Georgia
May 29, 1864

Dear Mother,

There is a mail goes at 1 PM. Don’t hardly know but it has gone now but must write a line if possible for we have had another short but terrible engagement, although our loss was wonderfully small.
We came suddenly upon the enemy here on the Allatoona Mts. Wednesday night and charged fiercely on them without knowing their numbers or position and found them behind fortifications pouring grape and canister into us and we had no artillery to bear on them.
The Col. was wounded in the leg, has had it taken off. Robert Skellie was shot dead. Lewis Tripp wounded slightly, John Oberne wounded slightly, this is all in our co. James Cummings of Putnam was killed.
But I must stop. I will write you a long letter soon.

Love to all from your boy,
Will
